Our History

Pennies for Education and Health was established in January 2003 at the aftermath of the Gujarat earthquake and the subsequent events which prevented the children of needy families from getting even the basic education needed to be functioning members of society.
Drs. Basheer and Saleha Khumawala, both faculty members in the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, were inspired to start the organization after the visit to the refugee camps was an experience they simply could not forget. The helpless cries of the families and seeing the countless children with no hope for the future spurred them. Their goal to transform the lives of a new generation is simple: “Empowerment through education and Good Health.”
